Some of the materials are SO gorgeous I almost hate to put them up. The new model (which will sit on the new gravel foundation) will be covered in rich greens, rust, peach and browns. It will be fully insulated from the ground up, building this one the right way!

Not that I'd want to feed the fires of dissent, but didn't DHS recently identify Americans as our most intractable community problem? They're going to use 9/11 to trick or shame us into participating in a National Service Day. Now what kind of person will refuse to help on that
particular day? Imagine the insults applicable to such blatant selfishness, why it's practically criminal irresponsibility to refuse to serve our great nation and honor our lost dead. We need everyone to pull together, become greater than self and serve America. Everyone, no matter how old can find something to do, and every day the government is getting more organized in ways to help everyone find something to do. No one should be allowed to lazily shirk their share of the nation's burden. Our guru Etzioni says our unfettered Rights must be balanced with responsibilities if we want to grow into a moral society, and service work is a requirement of communitarian citizenship. Preparing for the interview tommorow morning and looked up Grants Pass, sustainable development, community policing and fusion centers. Ended up at this amazing site called Creating Community. It's a very long list of intentional communities in the US. I scanned through it and read the titles of them, seems to represent a variety of "values" from Christian to Green.

Creating Community has a lot of links to building alternative housing, and it's so ironic but I'm really interested in those. :) I think cob houses and Earthships are great! I love the idea of becoming self-sufficient and building our own abodes. I hate the idea of being stuck with a group of brainwashed eco fanatics who would expect me to share their Hegelian values, participate in group "spiritual" events and perform on demand. I don't know that I'd be as unhappy in a Christian Community, because I do share many of their genuine values, but after twenty years of working in public venues and living in shared housing in Seattle for five years, I'm pretty much done with the whole in your face social scene. It does appear that gertee fits in well with this whole earthfriendly scam, except my anti-philosophy doesn't. So I've decided to use my gertee book to explain my personal philosophy of life, to address the communitarian scam from a different place inside me, the place that motivated me to expose them in the first place. I think I've written enough on their specific programs, plans and laws. It sure feels like I have.

"Grow community?" Like HUD's Weed&Seed program, people are either bad weeds that need to be pulled and tossed, out or good seeds that need to be covered with compost. How did American "public officials" (presumably on the public payroll) gain the authority to "encourage community oriented development?" What exactly does community oriented development mean?

I've been over Grants Pass several times but not sure if that's the city too. It was usually foggy since it was usually winter, and one time I stopped at the rest area somewhere up there in the middle of the night in a snowstorm and my dog jumped out of the car. I jumped out to chase her and locked the keys inside. I ended up using my bike lock, a rubber covered metal chain to break in the drivers window. I had a 1976 Ford Gran Torino (what a great car) and it took me hours. I remember it still as being one of those times when I wondered later why I hadn't felt any real fear or concern for my "safety" in that situation. And huh, is that the town I spent the night in the bus station waiting to cross the eastern pass over to Klammath Falls in Nov 1975? Did it used to be a logging town? I should go look at an Oregon map. I don't kn0w much about Oregon firsthand except that it was always a good place to fill up when I was heading north to Washington or Alaska or south to California, Nevada or Arizona on I-5. They had a law against pumping gas yourself. I miss the old days when gas station attendants did it all for me, and so cheerfully. Do they still have that law?

I have read quite a bit about the Portland area since it is a "model" sustainbabe city and I went through Ashland's proposed Charter revisons on the Jeff Rense show. So far Grants Pass looks like they haven't adopted many of LA21 goals, they have no identifiable connection with the international ICLEI community, but they do have community policing, a Volunteer Corps, Neighborhood Watch and a citizen's police training academy. Their website seems to be laid out well with direct access to everything they're doing. Their development codes appear, at first glance, to be more American than communitarian. Just the fact that they post their Quasi-Judicial Hearing Rules makes them a better place than Seattle, whose officials who hid everything and then refused to provide us with any documentation regarding their "quasi-judicial hearings." It's a pdf so I may not try to read it, but as far as I know it's an agency term and may be part of the Administrative Procedures Code, which is communitarian and used by every American agency.

Some Real Climate Scientist/Skeptics Speak Out: by Eric Karlstrom

I thought this was a nice list of quotes that came in on Peter Myer's elist, Global Warming or Global Governance? Quotes and References compiled by Eric Karlstrom, a Professor of Geography at California State University. Also a musician, and a 9/11 Dissident. His website is http://erickarlstrom.com/. So I posted it here and then I went to Karlstrom's site and loaded one of his articles from 1993, "Stewardship of the Land: Man's Proper Role in Nature" From Desert Call, vol. 28, no. 4, p. 4-9. 1993. After reading it I decided Professor Karlstrom may have had a complete reversal in his way of thinking, and he may just be confused about what else the global government promotes, but so far it looks like he is a preacher for the UN's Gaia religion.

Saturday update--I missed this, should have printed the entire forward. I edited it because many of his quotes I already printed here last week. Here's what he wrote to Peter, "Yes, the Green movement has been co-opted by radical communist types it seems. I've awakened to this in the last year- particularly with the issue of man-made global warming, which I think is nonsense. And this is the stuff (physical geography, climate change, etc.) that I have studied academically for all my career." I wonder if he still believes the Natives, Amish and Benedictine Monks have the model cultures for a sustainable world, and if he still thinks UN LA21 and EarthFirst! is a great idea. I think I may respond to Peter about this. I rarely write anything for his list, but this coincides with my local research right now. Karlstrom should know damn well his "spiritual" movement wasn't "co-opted by radical communist types," it was created by radical theologians. Spiritual environmentalism is communitarianism.

Every time I ask a local if they think the Ahtna tribe shows good leadership in their role model for teaching us responsible stewardship of the land, the answer is always unprintable. The Ahtna tribe has been locking down access to local rivers and charging high fees for crossing, fishing, hunting, trapping or camping on their "protected" lands. We're surrounded by millions of acres of beetle kill spruce that a sensible populace would clean and burn. In fact that's my "theory" of how the Gaia loving environmentalists will eventually clear out this area. Why go door-to-door engaging in lethal combat with die hard constitutional abiding Alaskans when one big fire would eliminate that threat altogether. The Australian fires burn fresh in my memory.

And I didn't know Lovelock's Gaia theory calls chainsaws, cattle and combustion the 3 most harmful pathogens! I LOVE my chainsaw... Lovelock should have to spend a winter in a Gertee in Alaska with just an axe... wonder what kind of a God he'd create after that experience, all hail the Chainsaw Goddess?

I have studied their climate models and know what they can do. The models solve the equations of fluid dynamics and do a very good job of describing the fluid motions of the atmosphere and the oceans. They do a very poor job of describing the clouds, the dust, the chemistry, and biology of fields, farms and forests. They do not begin to describe the real world that we live in. They are full of fudge factors that are fitted to the existing climate, so the models more or less agree with the observed data. Atmospheric physics is quite clear that increasing CO2 concentrations increases temperature. The best way to demonstrate this is to model the temperature of the atmosphere with all CO2 removed. It is very cold. Then, increase CO2 by small increments and plot the graph of temperature increase. It is very rapid initially and then flattens out. Doubling CO2 from today’s concentration, holding all other parameters constant, has a “negligible” effect.

Alaskan Gardening for novices

My first Alaskan vegetable and flower garden

The garden plot (or a miniature graveyard)

This is going to be very interesting to see what I can grow. Our growing season is so short most locals use greenhouse starts. I was able to plant snap peas because they can withstand frost, but have to wait until June to plant the rest. I've got what my neighbor said is a very "different" assortment of seeds and not what Alaskans normally grow. It's not even an exotic mix, maybe it's all the peppers that aren't so popular up here. I grew lovely peppers in Vegas. :) Next year I need a gertee greenhouse.

The only additive I have for the soil is the ash I mixed in and the veggie/coffee slop I poured into the space all winter (no idea if it will help or hinder either). Put the dirt into mounds on a slight slope so it has good drainage anyway. Two robins moved into the cottonwood tree I almost cut down and have been picking in the dirt, so I'm assuming there's something live in the soil, although I haven't seen one worm yet.. no beetles... just gnats, flies and skeets and LOTS of spiders this year. Very few bees and no wasps yet either.

Feels great to have my hands in the dirt, it's coinciding with getting over this virus and I feel healed. I am still very amazed at how much better I felt this winter having my EarthPad and how much more endurance I have for heavy chores in sub-zero temperatures. I'm 52 years old now and I'm very grateful for my good health and strength. My teeth may be falling out but my bones and muscles are still in pretty good shape. Sometimes I do wish I'd have started this lifestyle in my 30s at least, but 20 years ago I would never have imagined this is what I'd be doing in my 50s. It still looks like madness to the people who knew me when I lived in houses and I have come to realize that the ideal gertee set-up needs to include plumbing. But I'm glad I know how to live without it just in case it beomes something we all have to do. I keep thinking that even if I end up in a concentration camp I can see myself building gertees in there too.

It is such a reward to feel the sunshine and watch the earth come alive again. So many more bird and animal sounds at night now, can't always recognise them... eep. Not too many bears out yet, Tim saw a griz by Tonsina and his grandson and dad saw one when they were out flying around the other day. My biggest animal concern lately has been the horseshoe rabbits but the fox family living under the Community Hall pretty much took care of that for me.

Started a new webwriter contract for kennylakechalet.com, another venue in our growing city. I'm trying to just keep going in spite of all the dire predictions and worsening conditions around the world. It's not even like I have any hope that the global government will fail to assume power. I don't know how much longer I'll still be free to do whatever I want, say whatever I think and go where ever I can afford to go. But I've been blessed with some of the best conditions for living independent of government intrusions, and I think I have an obligation to be present in every moment that I have left as a "free" woman. I hope all of you have found a way to live and love in spite of your knowledge and pain. I don't know what else to do anymore. I create in order to become closer to my Creator.
