I saw the same title at the end of a Michael Pollan article and googled "knight professor". The top hit seemed to have the answer as both people mentioned here are listed there:

http://www.knightfoundation.org/about/knight-chairs/

(Note: The second hit was this blog post so congrats on that!)

Here's the wiki for the organization too:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_FoundationRanger.txthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04850730828871743151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938933649493088489.post-82884847789846318742013-01-13T15:43:29.798-08:002013-01-13T15:43:29.798-08:00Endowed chairs are usually named after their donor...Endowed chairs are usually named after their donors or someone the donor wants to honor. If you give enough money to a college, it will endow a professorship named after you. If somebody named Knight does it instead, the school will endow a Knight professorship. That's what happened here.

Prof. Balkin's chair is named after John and James Knight. It has nothing to do with knighthood, and it is not a title of nobility. Titles of nobility have to be awarded by governments. The Knight Professorship is just a job title awarded by his employer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938933649493088489.post-56533022743341628042012-03-01T01:27:25.892-08:002012-03-01T01:27:25.892-08:00Now I'm even more confused. There are professors with this title at colleges as diverse as Yale, Stanford, and the University of Oregon. However, the only notable person I can find at all with the name Philip H. Knight is the chairman and co-founder of Nike. What the hey?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938933649493088489.post-79940636950880130262011-01-08T14:14:05.252-08:002011-01-08T14:14:05.252-08:00"Across the 26 Knight cities, the Community P..."Across the 26 Knight cities, the Community Partners Program deploys program directors who provide community leadership, seeking big ideas with the potential to transform a community, a system, a network.
